Research by Deloitte shows that organisations with a talent management program are likely to make twice as much profit per employee. Furthermore, turnover is 40% lower and involvement of staff is 38% higher. Maximising talent pays off, on the business and personal front.
First things first: what are we talking about? A talent is a highly developed attribute, an aptitude. Talent refers to innate qualities. Someone who has a talent for running for instance has the opportunity to do more then ‘just OK’ with it. Only: talent needs practice, talent does not develop by itself. And to be successful you will also need commitment and perseverance. Added value Talent has huge potential value: whoever acts from their talents, stands strong. This gives confidence and enjoyment. If you do what you are good at, it is also a lot easier. To discover and develop your talents is part of your journey to happiness.
To recognise your talents is not always easy. It begins with self-knowledge: what type of person are you? You need to develop your talent too, so it is important to know how you learn best: by listening, speaking, writing, doing? To effectuate your talent you need to be able to transfer ideas: how do you do that in the best way? Do you prefer to make something, write, or perhaps give a workshop? Finally, it is important to define when you are successful: do you want to generate particular ideas, or do you want to run the process from A to Z? Are you a 'starter' or a 'finisher'?
Evolution has ensured that every person is unique. This enables us to come up with the most diverse creative and innovative solutions. At the same time it is human nature to be reactive: we often react only after the damage has been done. Our creative and reactive natures constantly fight for power. With your talents (creative side) you want to do all kinds of things (e.g. follow courses, do jobs at home), but often in practice little comes of it (reactive side).
Who wants their talents to come to full bloom will have to learn to control their 'dragons'. 'Dragons' are all factors that stand in the way of growth, for example, be angry, irritable, have too high expectations, be unrealistic, have self-pity, cannot set priorities, et cetera. How do you do that?
Rest assured: dragons are very human. Learning to cope with them is a process of trial and error. But someone who is self-conscious and réally wants to move forward, finally will turn their dragon into a sweet little lamb ...
